Pat Wilson O'Leary
Co-editor of "The Power of the Social Brain"
Meet Pat Wilson O'Leary from Portage, a long-time client of Wiser Financial Group and co-editor of the new book The Power of the Social Brain: teaching, learning and interdependent thinking. This book, co-edited with Arthur L. Costa of Sacramento, states that when people work in groups, in all areas of life, they don't always take advantage of the experiences, opinions, and information available among them. This book provides research and articles that show the need for and skills necessary to think together, as well as success stories of groups that have employed interdependent thinking.
The chapters in the book were each written by various authors—all experts and practitioners in the field. Five of the authors are from the Kalamazoo area and one from Lansing, giving us a local perspective on communicating and working together.
O'Leary has been a consultant and coach in K-12 classrooms and districts across the United States, Canada, and Puerto Rico. She co-authored three editions of A Guidebook for Cooperative Learning: Techniques for Creating More Effective Schools, has written numerous articles, and has worked with thousands of teachers and administrators in the areas of cooperative learning, cooperative teacher teams, new teacher induction, mentoring, academic coaching, and teacher development. In recent years, Pat has served on several committees for the Michigan Department of Education to update state policies for school improvement.
