Turn On, Tune In, Drop Out

I promise I am not encouraging you to go back to 1967 and the days of Timothy Leary.
In 1967 Leary spoke at the Human Be-In gathering to approximately 30,000 hippies in Golden Gate Park in San Francisco. While many over the years have said that he was encouraging people to "Get stoned and abandon all constructive activity," the reality was he was encouraging the opposite.
When he said "Turn on" he meant to activate and engage your mind. "Tune in" meant interact in harmony with the world around you. "Drop out" meant have a level of self-reliance and embrace choice and change.
I have to admit that his famous phrase came to mind a couple of weeks ago when I tried a little experiment. Trust me, it was not LSD!
I had to recognize that I was suffering from "Trump" fatigue and the only way that I could think of to improve my attitude at that time was to mandate a weekend news block out in my home.
It started on a Friday morning and ended on a Monday evening. I did not watch any news on television for an entire weekend. I did not read any news on my phone for the entire weekend. If a friend posted anything on Facebook that had any reference to President Trump I blocked seeing any further posts from that person.
I deliberately blocked any good news regarding President Trump and any bad news regarding President Trump.
I felt so good at the end of my experiment that I am encouraging each person who is reading this rant to do the same thing. I promise you will feel better about yourself, the world, and you may discover that it is time to get rid of some of your "friends" on Facebook.
I encourage you to just pay attention to what is going on in your community. I live in Kalamazoo and see large amounts of capital being invested which means more jobs, higher paying jobs, and more opportunities for growth in the future.
I have noticed almost every business has an advertisement saying they need people who want to work and can be dependable.
Kalamazoo is not the economic darling of the world so if investment is taking place here it is also taking place across America.
The simple truth is that you hear none of this on the news because it is not the narrative that is being pushed. So turn on your mind, tune in to your family, and drop out of the news for the rest of summer!
It has been a great one here in Southwest Michigan and it will be over before you know it.1
